About Us
Our name reflects the power of the hearth, an ancient nexus of connection, comfort, and community.
As a Queer, POC-owned small business, what sets us apart is our diverse experience across the health, housing, and human services spectrum. Our knowledge of inclusive, equity-centered evaluation approaches, combined with our multidisciplinary experiences, positions us as a unique consulting firm with a distinct perspective.

We’ve seen how health and housing disparities arise from complex system failure. By using emergent evaluation approaches and a systems-thinking perspective, we support our clients in developing targeted solutions for the communities they serve.
Our Team
Lovel Trahan

Lovel began his health advocacy career early, interpreting his own pediatric visits since his family was refused a sign language interpreter. He saw firsthand a clinical system not designed for the needs of all patients. As an HIV/AIDS case manager, many of the systemic challenges his clients faced echoed his own experiences. This convinced him to pursue a dual Masters of Public Policy & Public Health at the University of Minnesota because improved outcomes for patients begins by designing inclusive systems. He has been fortunate to work with cultural communities across the state of Minnesota as a research assistant at Allina Health, a policy writer at JustUs Health, and a program evaluator at The Center for Prevention at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota. His passion for inclusive process improvement through collaborative evaluation lead him to become a founding partner of Hearth Analytics.
Michael Urness

Michael Urness is always curious about what makes things work. A graduate of the College of Design at the University of Minnesota, he received a M.S. in Design-Housing Studies and is pursuing his doctorate; his research focuses on the unique housing needs of the LGBT population. In addition, he has presented and published work on green building technologies, residential solar power and live/work housing. His 7 years with Habitat for Humanity taught him that housing is key to many puzzles. His work seeks to center equity and engage communities to create healthy homes and a more just society. Before graduate school, he twice served as an AmeriCorps VISTA. He is currently focused on grant writing and creating tools for developers of multifamily housing to assess resident satisfaction and aid in retention.
